Summer Fun!
Summer is here! Summer is great: long days, warm weather, ice cream, windows down, barefeet..... But there are a few perils for our four legged friends. Here is a quick little list to remind you of some of the perils that our fur friends may encounter over the summer.
Fireworks.....Need I say more, Do you know more dogs go missing around the July 4th holiday than at any other time of year? Keep your dog in a safe place, most dogs really rather pass on the noise and vibrations and crowds around fireworks. Some dogs become truly stressed over this holiday. Here are a couple of suggestions. Keep your pooch in a quiet safe place. If they are use to a crate this is a perfect spot, if not keep in a quiet room, one that will help to insulate the sound of the fireworks from their sensitive ears. Put on some soothing music. No RAP or Heavy bass please. "Through a Dog's Ear' CD's which are wonderful, any classical music you might have available is also a good choice!
If you haven't tried flower essences before, try them now. There are many different brands of flower essences, check with your local pet store or try Rescue Remedy, a great choice that is available at most drug stores.
ID..ID...ID: This bears repeating: More dogs go missing around the 4th than at any other time of year! Make sure your dog has an ID tag. Microchips are great, but if someone two streets away finds your dog, do you want to have to wait until someone with a scanner can check your dog for a chip or do you want your dog home NOW! If you don't have an ID, try one of these ideas: Get a Sharpie pen, and write your phone number on the inside of their collar, Or tape a piece of duck tape around part of their collar with your contact info. Better yet get a new ID tag! Heat: Dog's do not perspire like we do. Dogs do have sweat glands between the pads of their paws, but dogs mostly cool themselves by panting. It is crucial that dogs always have access to fresh water and shady areas on hot and humid days.
And Never, ever, ever leave your dog in a car on hot days! Here is a good article from PetMD about heat stroke in dogs. Be Prepared To borrow the phrase from the girl & boy scouts...It is good advice. If you take your dog on lots of outings, make yourself a little first aid kit. Old socks are great for cut paws and can work as a make shift bandage. Keep a supply of water in the car for your pooch. A spare leash is always helpful, and my personal favorite is to keep a copy of your dog's Rabies vaccination record in the car glove box. Enjoy the summer and enjoy fun time with your dog! Hope to hear from you soon!
